In December, our area was featured in a story on Fox News.
The story chronicles the area’s journey from a 17.9% unemployment rate, to the much stronger position we are in now. The area’s high unemployment rate was due to some key manufacturing plants closing their doors. Fortunately, the local business leaders saw the need to diversify our economy, and the vacancies left by some of our manufacturing companies were turned into a great benefit.
The region has extensive power and water infrastructure in place. It has nuclear power, and a pro-business environment. These things, along with financial incentives and great location, have encouraged many high-tech companies to move into the area. Our region is now becoming known as a “Data Center Corridor”.
The Town of Maiden has a new Apple Data Center, and Lenoir houses a large Google Data Center. Facebook has announced plans to build a large data center in Forest City, North Carolina, which is part of our larger region.
